Design Direction: What’s Trending in the Décor World

Every now and again, we like to study up on what trends are making their way into the interior design space, and what trends are on their way out. While some design trends have proven to stand the test of time and endure season after season, we are well aware that there are a handful of design trends that may steal the show for a short time, later to be filed away as “so last season.” And with that in mind, we’ve done some research so we can keep our spaces as up-to-date as possible, while still sticking to the tried and true classics that will never go out of style.

We enlisted the help of one of our expert design contributors, Kate Lester, to let us in on what’s hot and what’s not, and we’re sharing her wisdom with you all today. So without further ado, here are the design trends on our radar as of late, and why we’re loving them…

Hunter Green Kitchens & Baths

“We are OBSESSED with this color scheme and carrara marble right now. Add in brass hardware, and OMG.” – Kate Lester

Hunter green seems to be the color of the moment when it comes to interiors, and we are eager to hop on the bandwagon. Especially during the chilly fall and winter months, this rich hunter green hue adds an element of coziness to what could easily be a cold space. Plus, that deep green is giving us major vintage country club vibes—with a modern twist, of course—and we’re not mad about it one bit. Kate said it best… this combo is to-die-for.

Vintage, Found, & Handcrafted Accents

“I feel like Etsy and Instagram have helped foster the whole handmade movement. We are also obsessed with all things vintage right now.” – Kate Lester

Mixing vintage and “found” items into a fresh design is a trend that has piqued our interest lately, and we don’t plan on falling out of love with it anytime soon. The mix of old and new adds an element of interest to a space that prevents it from feeling too stiff, and believe it or not, the handcrafted items in a well-designed space are often what visitors and viewers are drawn to the most!

It is these little treasures that make your space yours, and make it feel unique. So bundle up those trinkets that aren’t quite in line with the rest of your décor, and make them a statement piece on your perfectly styled book shelf or coffee table. (But don’t go overboard! Just a few bold pieces in your space will make your point without getting messy.)

Patterned Tile

“Obvi, this has been a trend in the design world for a while, but I think it’s still going strong. And now many companies are providing these tiles that were once only cement, in porcelain as well! (Which is MUCH more durable.)” – Kate Lester

Patterned, handmade tiles have been on our radar for a little while now, and it’s easy to see why! These gorgeous tiles add a pop of interest no matter where you put them, and they are so versatile when it comes to placement—we’ve seen them on stair risers, fireplaces, kitchen backsplashes… and that’s just the beginning. You can use these tiles almost anywhere, and the unique patterns give any space just a touch of that artisan feel that we all crave.

White Walls & Painted Trim

“This is a really unique look that leaves a space with a more sophisticated, elevated feel. Trim DOES NOT always have to be white!” – Kate Lester

We have to say, this is a new one to us and we absolutely couldn’t love it more. The stark contrast between white walls and bold painted trim adds a feeling of confidence to a space, and complements other décor pieces in the best way. The best part is that you don’t have to paint every inch of trim in a room to pull this look off. Highlight one or two elements of your space with bold painted trim, such as window casings or doors, for a look that is totally daring, yet undeniably sophisticated.

Can you see yourself incorporating any of these trends into your space? Which one do you love the most? Keep your eye right here on the blog, because we’ll be updating these trends as they come to help you keep your space (and ours) as chic as possible. Happy decorating, everyone!
