In 2018, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in favor of the state in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc. This ruling overruled the physical presence rule, which previously allowed online retailers to collect sales tax in states in which they were located. Because of this ruling, states now require online retailers to collect and remit sales tax in the states in which they are shipping goods.
