Behind the Scenes: The Making of Dogs at The Beverly Hills Hotel

Hi Everyone,

I hope by now you’ve all had the chance to explore my latest series, Dogs at The Beverly Hills Hotel. This series was inspired by the glamorous guests who frequent The Beverly Hills Hotel and the posh pets that come along with them. I wanted to create a world where these dogs lived and worked at the hotel. It was so fun watching it all come to life.

Watch the behind the scenes video below to see the magic come together...

I shot this series back in February of this year, just about a month before the world began to shut down due to Covid-19. Looking back, it doesn’t even feel like it was the same year. It’s crazy to think that we had no idea how much the world would change just 4 weeks later! I feel so fortunate that I was able to capture these photographs right before going under Stay at Home orders because finishing this project has helped keep me inspired and excited. We styled the dogs in vintage designer accessories and custom-made costumes to give the series a timeless and playful feel and the vintage cars really made the series complete. Fun fact: We shot over 20 dogs for this series!

Although we had a very clear vision of the shots we wanted to get for this shoot, it wasn’t until we were actually on set that everything really came to life. Capturing all the dogs’ personalities made the resulting photographs even better than I could have imagined. Once we were able to play around with the accessories and see what the dogs were capable of, my imagination began running wild and I got more and more excited with each shot.

As you all probably have come to realize, I love capturing animals in my photography. Although I’d shot some amazing exotic animals in my series Gray Malin at the Parker, working with dogs was a completely new experience for me! All the dogs were so sweet and friendly and I was thrilled with the variety of poses and looks they were able to offer. For this pool scene, we hadn’t intended on having any dogs in the pool, but made the decision when we found out that the pug we were featuring knew how to surf! We found an innertube that had a solid button so the pug could just hang out in the water.

I love getting to share these behind-the-scenes peeks with you al after each of my series releases. Since I can’t bring all of you on set with me, this is the next best thing! It also gives me the chance to look back on my process and reflect on the memories. Do you have a favorite images from the series? You can explore all of Dogs at The Beverly Hills Hotel here.

Cheers!

Xx
