Design Direction: How to Bring Home the South of France

Last week Gray released what has quickly become our new favorite series—Côte d’Azur. Côte D’azur translates to “Coast of Azure,” and this getaway series is basically our at-home solution to living our best lives on the French Riviera (without actually living there). The collection is muted, romantic, and bursting with bliss-filled images from the destination. So it’s a no-brainer that we’d want to take them home with us, right?

Whether you’ve been to the South of France every summer since you can remember, or it’s still on your bucket list, we’re giving you a few pointers on how to bring home the South of France, no matter your real-life relationship with the Côte D’azur.

1. Take notes from nature.

If there’s one thing that the French do well, it is taking notes from their Mediterranean surroundings and weaving them into their interiors. Being on the French Riviera is all about the sea, sand, and sky, so décor accents in these hues are always welcome.

2. Go au naturel.

We’ve all heard this expression before, and it is absolutely fitting that it hails from France. Au naturel means “being in natural style or condition” or “in the nude,” so make sure to tie in lots of natural accents when dressing your space. Things like woven baskets, rattan, natural wood finishes, and other sand-inspired accessories are perfect for achieving that laidback French Riviera style. Not to mention, a few bistro chairs in the kitchen scream “South of France” (in the best way possible), so line ‘em up!

3. Layer up.

Bringing home the South of France is all about that casual, layered look, so don’t be afraid to add lots of texture and natural textiles to your space. Instead of one rug, try layering something neutral on top of a jute rug or other woven style. Draping lightweight throws over the couch, over a bench, or even over a console table also makes “layering” your space a breeze at la Plage.

4. Add depth to your design.

The style of the French Riviera is uncomplicated, but not boring. Where there is light wood, linen, and crisp whites, there is always also something to add depth and balance. Bringing in darker metal finishes like antique bronze or dark iron are key to nailing that South of France style, even if just in small doses. This can also be done by mixing rich colors into your palette, like terra cotta, amber, deep blues, and golden yellows.

5. Don’t overlook the outdoors.

It’s no secret that we wish we could lounge on the Mediterranean coast 24/7, but unfortunately that’s not the case. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t curate a calm and serene outdoor space that makes us feel like we’re (almost) there. So add some lounge chairs and sea-inspired textiles to your porch or balcony, mix up a cocktail, and schedule some alone time with the outdoors.

6. Let life imitate art.

And of course, no space is complete without an actual visual of the South of France hanging on the walls, right? Hanging one of these prints is a fool-proof way to bring the Côte D’azur home in a literal way, and there’s no limit to how many you can mix. The dreamy aesthetic of these prints will add immediate calm to your space—we can almost feel the sea breeze just looking at them!

Are you as in love with the South of France as we are?
