Travel Guide: The Ultimate Marfa, Texas Trip

There are few things we love more than a great getaway here in the GM office. We also think the best trips are the ones that leave you inspired and give you long-lasting memories. With our annual Prada Marfa flash sale going on, we’ve got Marfa, Texas on the mind and, while we’ve already shared some fun Marfa travel tips like where to stay, andwhere to stop along the way, we thought it would be fun to put it all together to create one complete guide to the ultimate Marfa, Texas trip.

Getting There

While you certainly can fly, why not take a road trip to really get the most out of it? There are so many fun stops to make along the way, but some of our favorites are Salvation Mountain in Niland, California and The Neon Museum right outside Las Vegas.

Once You’re There

Most people are very familiar with Marfa’s vibrant art scene, but what a lot of people don’t know is that Marfa is home to some unique hotel experiences and delicious food as well.

Check out the Thunderbird Hotel (where we stayed on our team trip last year) for its chic and minimalist interior design or be a little more exotic and stay at the El Cosmico for a true “glamping” experience you’ll never forget.

Like we mentioned before, Marfa has an amazing food scene that often gets overlooked. Marfa Burrito is certainly legendary (the homemade tortillas alone are reason enough to visit this spot), but our personal favorite restaurant in Marfa is Al Campo. Sip on a glass (or two or three) of delicious wine while enjoying fresh farm-to-table cuisine al fresco.

What To See

It should go without saying that a visit to the Prada Marfa installation by artists Elmgreen and Dragset should be at the top of your list. Not only has this site been the inspiration behind the two releases of Gray’s Prada Marfa series (shop on sale now!), but it was also the series that really launched Gray’s career back when he was still selling at the Melrose Flea Market. As stunning as it looks in photos, we promise it’s even more compelling in person.

A trip to Marfa is also not complete without making a stop at the Chinati Foundation to experience their incredible art installations firsthand. Our personal favorite exhibit is Dan Flavin’s fluorescent light exhibition. If Prada Marfa is at the top of your list, this should certainly be a very close second.

Before you leave, you can’t miss the most magical part of Marfa—the Marfa Lights. These colorful lights twinkle in the distance along the Southeast Horizon just outside of Marfa and are a true mystery. No one has been able to identify the source of the lights, which honestly just adds to the mystique. The official viewing area for the Marfa Lights is just a short drive out of town, if you want to experience the wonder for yourself, which you totally should.

Whether or not you’re planning your own trip to Marfa, you can bring home the magic with a print from our Prada Marfa sale! The sale is only for a limited time though, so don’t wait. Bring home the print of your Prada Marfa dreams today!
