Design Direction: Start With Art - Creating a Statement-Making Bar Cart With Kelly Stone

One of our favorite spots in house to decorate is the bar or bar cart! Though sometimes treated as an after thought, there are so many small details you can incorporate into your bar that will really pull the whole space together. The bar is also the perfect place to have a little bit of fun with your decor and show some personality. For this week’s Start With Art series, interior designer Kelly Stone is showing us how she styled prints from Gray’s Bon Voyage series to bring her bar cart to life. The best part is you can recreate this look or share your own jetset style with our Bon Voyage flash sale, which ends tomorrow night!

Hi, I’m Kelly!Abusy Mom of 7-year-old boy/girl twins, Asher & Violet with a supportive husband and a growing design business. What started out as a hobby has grown into my dream job! After designing my own home and with nudges from friends and family I started my own design firm, Kelly Stone Interiors. I specialize in residential as well as commercial spaces. Having a job that allows me to be creative and also make spaces beautiful is my dream come true. Bringing my clients joy is always my number one goal and my number one reward! I always aim to create beautiful, inspiring and happy spaces. Let’s face it, we all need to find joy in the spaceswherewe spend most of our time. I love color, pattern, texture (and plants) along with a bunch of other stuff, but those are the basics. I’m drawn to well-lit spaces, bright white paint and a bit of whimsy. My secret is mixing vintage pieces in with the modern. I always tell my clients that I’ll push them to choose pieces that they wouldn’t usually consider and to make their own spaces unique and multi-dimensional. Seeing the work come together is always the best part!

How would you define your interior design style?

What a tricky question! My design style is such a combination of several different styles. I like old Hollywood, art deco, and rich styles from different regions and time periods mixed with boho and contemporary. I bring all the styles together by incorporating texture, cohesive color palettes, and of course the perfect artwork.

What drew you to Gray's Bon Voyage series?

The overall whimsicality of the series immediately drew me in. They’re so fun and undeniably show off Gray’s creative genius! I’ve never seen anything else like them before and each piece is so unique and entertaining. To be honest I’d like to add one or two more to this wall in the future. It’s a cool series because you can continue to build your collection and add depth to your space. It was tough to choose which ones to start with, but now that I have them, I’m hooked!

What did you pick out as the most important elements of the print to incorporate into the space?

I’m always drawn to color of course, but in this room, I wanted to incorporate the playfulness of the photographs. I dressed up this antique bar cart with fun accents and pretty liquor bottles (that’s my little trick, always look for the most beautiful and interesting bottles with tons of color). Creating a table scape with different heights, shapes and textures brought some fun dimension into the space that tells you “The party is over here!” Also, almost everything in this room is vintage and I love knowing that each piece of furniture carries a rich history. Pair that with the happy new artwork and you’ve got a pretty and interesting looking space.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone who wants to design a space and start with art?

When choosing artwork, pick something that makes you feel good. Any art that evokes emotion is a good choice. I’m always so careful when making my selections because they really have to be pieces that I’ll enjoy looking at for years to come. I take my favorite aspect of each piece and pull them into the room. Maybe it’s color, maybe it’s movement, maybe it’s the setting of the piece. Whether the art is your starting off point or your finish touch, it’s necessary to create a vibe. Art is a mood. Carry that mood throughout your space.

Do you have a bar cart at home? If so, maybe it’s time to add a piece of art to really make the space pop. You can take advantage of our sale and shop Gray’s Bon Voyage series here.
