Home/Room Tour: At Home with Nicolette Mason

Hi Everyone,

When I first met Nicolette Mason, it was the day of this photo shoot, and I quickly learned that she is a very busy lady. As we toured her home, she told me how she had moved in about a year ago but had been traveling so much for work, that it is such a treat to actually be home. This is a statement that I can truly relate to as I am all about the staycation. Aside from having that in common, Nicolette was someone I just liked immediately, so I'm excited to share her home as well as our conversation with you all today.

Nicolette, will you please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about what you do?

My name is Nicolette Mason. I’m a creative consultant, freelance writer, and co-founder of Premme, a plus-size apparel company.

Very cool. We'll definitely come back to everything that entails, but first...lets talk decor. I'm really loving that you chose this print from my Aqua Glam series.

What would you say your style is when it comes to decorating your home/dream space?

For me, my approach to home is creating a space that is warm, inviting, comfortable, and that is an extension of my personal style. I love to have fun with color and texture, and definitely tend to mix styles that don’t inherently “go” together. I split my time between New York and Los Angeles, and feel like each space is designed as a complement to those cities - a slightly more industrial approach in NY, and a lush, green nod to the palm trees of LA.

You'll see what she means by the palm trees of LA very shortly...

What inspired you to choose this particularprint for your home office?

I love being in the water, love the aqualillies (if you ever get a chance to see them perform, do!), and love the entire Aqua Glam series. The colors are so beautiful and calming, and it harkens to the Hollywood Glamour that is a recurring theme in my home.

I love Gray’s use of color and approach to scale - and how a gorgeous landscape photo can be transformed into a pattern in so many of his products - and how they transport you to a totally different place. One of the first pieces I saw of Gray’s was his Prada Marfa series, and then his aerial beach shots, and each one took me on a journey or inspired me to hop on a plane, (a girl can dream!)

Spoiler alert, we'll see that she does transport to a beach or two from the Á la Plageseries in another part of her home. Before we do, though I would love to hear more about Nicolette's brand as well as how she got to where she is today.

Could you give us an overview about what your business is all about?

Premme is mine and my business partner, Gabi Gregg’s, brainchild. We wanted to create a brand that would build our dream wardrobe - taking inspiration from street style and runways and adopting a rule-breaking approach to fashion. It’s pretty incredible (and sad!) that there are only a handful of fashion-forward plus-size brands, and we wanted to add more to the current landscape. We just launched in July - and have our fall collection dropping at the end of September!

Congrats! I love that you saw something missing in the market and went after creating it!

What challenges as well as joys have you encountered as an entrepreneur, thus far?

I truly believe that launching Premme is what everything in my career has been leading up to: from being a contributing editor and columnist at Marie Claire for 5-years, to writing feature stories for Bust, Glamour, Teen Vogue, Refinery29, and more, to consulting on brands like Target and Barbie, to designing capsule collections with other great fashion companies. It’s truly a joy and a privilege to get to create something that I’m so genuinely passionate about. That said, everything anyone says about how hard it is to launch a business - it’s like, 10x harder! Being a start-up has its own challenges, but I think because this is a brand that is so intimately personal to me, Gabi and I are truly involved in every single step of building - and right now, that’s a 24-hour-a-day job. So, I guess, the biggest challenge is really knowing when to step away and take a break!

Oh Nicolette, I totally hear you but keep it up! I'm inspired just by hearing your story, so it's easy to believe that this effect won't stop with me. Now that we've got our business talk finished, lets head upstairs and see the reast of your pad...

Ahh..yes, immediately, I am lovingthe combinations of colors! Not to mention, I really like her two small framed beach aerials, Coogee Beach Horizontal and Clifton Beach, Cape Town. Also, I told you we'd get to see some palm trees. Isn't this wall paper fantastic?

Won't you please tell me about this wallpaper and the story behind the upstairs space, in general?

As far as a particular piece goes, the sputnik chandelier by Jonathan Adler has long been on my home and interiors wishlists, and I finally made it happen for my dining room. I worked with Emily Henderson and Brady Tolbert on designing my living room, dining, and kitchen - and they made so many of my dreams come true!

Living room wallpaper -- as an LA native, the Beverly Hills Hotel and their martinique wallpaper has always been iconic. I wanted something that evoked the same feeling without being the same print and pattern people have seen a million times. Emily and Brady introduced me to this pattern from Cole & Son and I fell in love!

I don't blame you! Thank you so much for letting us tour your home and to hear all about Premme! Inspired by Nicolette's decor? Now's the time to act on it...FREE FRAMING & SHIPPING, so take advantage while it lasts.

Cheers,

xx
