Shades of Gray: My Favorite Movies for a Cozy Night In

Hey Everyone,

If you follow me on my @graymalinpersonal Instagram account, then you know by now that I am no stranger to a night at home with hubs, a glass of wine, and, well, lots and lots of movies. But let’s be real, who doesn’t love a cozy night in, sans responsibilities?! Let’s just say it’s one of my favorite forms of R&R during the winter, and I don’t plan on stopping this after-work tradition any time soon.

That being said, I thought it would be fun to let you all in on what movies I have on repeat in our house. These picks truly never get old, and they go especially well with some cozy palm leaf PJs like this top and bottom set that I can’t live without! So without further ado, here is your official excuse to kick your feet up and indulge in a movie marathon tonight… Glass of wine and Sugarfina optional, but highly encouraged. ;)

1. The Devil Wears Prada If you have never seen this one before (or if you have), it is an absolute must. Anne Hathaway lands herself the new assistant position to the editor-in-chief of a reputable fashion magazine, and has to learn how to earn herself the respect she deserves as she works her way to the top. But at the end of the day, Meryl Streep as boss lady Miranda Priestly just gives me life. That’s all.

2. Julie & Julia Another Meryl Streep fave, this one tells the story of Julia Childs and how she got her famous start in the kitchen. At the same time, a food blogger named Julie Powell (played by Amy Adams) is on a mission to try all of Julia’s recipes from her first book, and this movie weaves both stories together in the best way.

3. Girls Trip – Anyone who knows me knows I am a huge Queen Latifah fan, and this movie is part of the reason why. Basically, four wild and hilarious friends join together for a trip to New Orleans, and the shenanigans they get into along the way are just too fun to watch.

4. Easy A Emma Stone stars in this flick as a run-of-the-mill high school student whose perfect life is turned upside down when false rumors start going around about her moral standing. It’s a hilarious story with a modern reference to The Scarlet Letter, and it’s so easy to love Emma’s character who’s just trying to make the best of a bad situation.

5. Troop Beverly Hills If you haven’t seen this classic yet, then you haven’t lived. Jeff and I even dressed up as Troop Beverly Hills for Halloween, and we have been coined “Troop West Hollywood” in honor of this flick! Basically, a Beverly Hills socialite wants to make a point that she can do anything, so she adopts a troop of girl scouts… and things just get better and better from there.

6. Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie What can I say about this comedy crime flick… Let’s just start by saying it’s about two friends, Edina and Patsy, who try to fly under the radar in France after accidentally knocking Kate Moss into a river. You just have to watch to see the rest for yourself!

7. The Parent Trap I mean, who doesn’t love a good switch-up? This story about two twins who switch places to spend time with the parents they never knew (and eventually try to hook them up again), is a funny and heartwarming flick you can’t say no to.

8. The Sound of Music Ah, classic Julie Andrews! In this musical drama, an Austrian nun leaves her life at the convent to become a nanny, or governess, to the seven children of a single Naval officer. The songs are catchy, and the story always puts a smile on my face.

9. Mrs. Doubtfire Robin Williams just might be his best ever in this movie. His character, who’s just separated from his wife, dresses up as their housekeeper so he can be close to his children—and of course they all fall in love with the character that is Mrs. Doubtfire.

10. The Help This book-turned-movie tells the story of a young author played by Emma Stone, who wants to write a book from the African American maids’ point of view during the ‘60s. It’ll make you laugh and cry the whole time, and leave you feeling so inspired by the end.

11. Bridget Jones Baby If you loved the first Bridget Jones, then this one should be next on your list. This time, Bridget discovers she is pregnant, but two men in the picture each have a 50/50 chance of being the father, and she’s not sure which one it is.

12. The Birdcage In this comedy, a gay cabaret owner and his partner (who is a drag queen) pretend to be straight so they can meet the very conservative parents of their son’s fiancée. This movie—and the charming characters in it—is sure to give you a good laugh, to say the least!

What are some of your all-time faves to watch for movie night?

Share them with me @GrayMalin so I can give them a watch. Cheers to a cozy night in!
