We’d like to welcome back our frequent contributor and interior designer extraordinaire, Prudence Bailey, to share her expertise on making a style statement in your room…. without going overboard. From mixing opulent furniture in with your basics to finding the perfect color palette, Prudence has so many great tips from her years of experience working in clients’ homes, and she’s sharing them all below. Take it away, Prudence…

It is so fun working with a homeowner that lets me run wild with their rooms. It’s often then that a room really shines, as there aren’t any restraints except making sure it reflects my client’s vision. So, if you love color, varied styles, textures and patterns, then creating a room with multiple design statements may be right for you.

Creating a space with multiple design statements means filling the room with different patterns and textures, for warmth and vibrancy. Don’t hold back! Pick pieces and patterns that you absolutely love, just remember to think carefully about how these statements all work together. Be sure that one is not outshining the other, but rather playing harmoniously together. Each statement piece should contribute to the overall look and feel of the room.

Not sure where to start? It’s easier than you may think if you follow a few simple steps.

Color

Start with a color palette. Play around until you have landed on a mix of colors you love. Not everything has to coordinate, but it should tell a story.Use a mood board or something similar until you have a story you adore. Then start filling in your core pieces: sofas, chairs, tables, rugs, lighting and window treatments. Take your time and don’t hurry through it.Remember, it doesn’t have to match, it just has to belong in the story you are creating. Don’t forget art! Think carefully about how it can help add color and support the story as well.

Opulent Furniture

Make sure the pieces you are selecting have something unique and luxurious about them. For example, grasscloth furniture gives you a beautiful texture, lacquered furniture a gorgeous sheen, and marble furnishings and gold or silver striping always makes a statement.Steer away from the ordinary and you will find the extraordinary. Then your only problem becomes that you can’t decide which piece in the room is your favorite!

Layering Texture and Pattern

Layering is so important in style statements.I love to layer in subtle tones so the effect is warm, yet calming, rather than loud. For instance, I would mix a bold floral chair in a beautiful linen with a geometric rug made from wool and bamboo silk. The rug is so lush with its gentle sheen and the bold chairs only help make the rug shine.Use pattern and texture generously throughout your space; think of your walls, draperies, pillows, furniture and accessories.

Mixing Styles

Lastly, don’t stick to just one time period.Mix traditional with modern, throw in some vintage, and watch your room come to life. A room’s beauty is often found when there is a mix of furniture styles, metals and patterns, so go for it!

How do you mix styles and design statements in your space?
