Design Direction: Home Makeover Surprise

Hi Everyone,

A friend of mine has been going through a tough time and while she’s been away I wanted to surprise her with a mini apartment makeover. My goal was to brighten up her space and bring her instant joy when she comes home and I wanted to share the transformation with you. Keep reading for some tips and fun before and after shots of the space.

Entryway

One of the first things I wanted to change about her apartment was making a big statement in the entryway. I chose a print from Positano that made you instantly feel transported to Italy when you walk in the door. I mean, who doesn’t want to feel like they’re in Italy when they come home after a long day?

Living Room

The biggest transformation though happened in the living room where we used new art, fresh pillows, and faux flowers to really make the space feel new.

For starters, we replaced the muted art above her console table with a bright and bold print from my series Gray Malin at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Since my friend lives in LA I knew she’d love a print that pays tribute to one of the city’s most iconic destinations. Since I’ve recently become obsessed with faux florals, we added a small vase of faux hydrangeas for a hassle-free accessory that brings the space to life.

The area that needed the most love was definitely above her couch where there was no art and just one large blank wall. My favorite way to fill a large wall is with a triptych, so I decided to hang my Waikiki Triptych here. The best part about triptychs is that they create the illusion of opening a window to another world. Not only does it fill the wall beautifully, but it also makes the space feel larger. I pulled the space together with pillows that tie in with the shades of blue in the print for a cohesive look. To top it off, we added a beautiful faux floral arrangement from Diane James Home.

What do you think? Quite the transformation, right? The best part it was small changes that made a big difference and will be easy for you to implement in your own home. If you liked this, let me know if you’d like to see more of them! Be sure to head to @graymalin on Instagram for a video tour of the space!

Cheers!

Xx
