Hi Everyone,

In honor of our favorite subject- INTERIOR DECORATING -we thought it would be fun to talk about some of the most popular decorating styles and how Gray's photography can fit into just about any look. You're sure to find something in one or more of these design styles that fit your own approach to interior decorating.

TRANSITIONAL

The transitional look bridges contemporary and traditional design. It's a marriage of these design stylescontemporary furniture, finishes, materials and fabrics equating to a classic, timeless design.

"When it comes to decorating our home I have always said that less is more. When we moved into our home last fall I knew that I wanted as much white as possible with pops of color (blue of course) coming from accessories and art. If I were to describe our home I would say it was very ‘transitional’ because we love to mix a lot of old and new." ~ Amy

"This whole design aspect of decorating my house is all very new to me! I’m figuring out that I love clean and classic pieces in neutral colors. Although I like simple pieces I still love having a little bohemian twist in my house. Also, loving mid century modern pieces when it comes to furniture. I know, so cliche, but the mid century pieces are just so good, and timeless!" ~ Courtney

TRADITIONAL (but not stuffy)

Begin by using classic styling and symmetry to create a calm, orderly decor. Color palette is usually in the mid-tones and fabrics are muted, usually simple florals, solids, stripes or plaids.Keep it warm and welcoming, though with flowers and artwork in unexpected places.

CONTEMPORARY

This style has roots in Modernism but softens the lines and brings in elements from more traditional design styles in an unique way. Contemporary rooms offer a hip vibe while looking very welcoming and comfortable.

ECLECTIC

This catch-all style borrows from several other design styles and evokes a sense of imagination and surprise with unexpected contrasts. The style is not simply throwing together everything and anything, but rather relies heavily on the building blocks of design (color, pattern, texture, composition) to make the space look cohesive. A multitude of fabrics is characteristic, whether patterned, textured, solids or all three.

"I LOVE color! LOVE IT!! My house always seems to arrange itself. In every room, somewhere there is always something lurking that’s either slightly inappropriate or, eye-widening, or just plain laugh out loud funny! Whether its obvious like a paper cut-out voice bubble that I’ve put on a painting, or a tongue in cheek object, I ensure that around every corner there’s always a little surprise… but you’ve gotta keep your eyes open!" ~ Mrs. Lilian

MID-CENTURY MODERN

A look originating in the '50s and '60s, Scandinavian designers and architects were very influential at this time, with a style characterized by simplicity, functionality and natural shapes. Pops of deep colors such as orange, yellow, green and chocolate brown add to decor.
