Design Direction: Decorating with Blue and White

Design trends come and go, but one thing that’s stood the test of time is blue and white decor. Although this color combo is typically associated with a nautical theme, it’s also one of the most classic and timeless combos that exist in the world of interior design. From ginger jars and toile to blue and white stripes, there is an endless amount of ways to decorate with this color scheme. Today we wanted to share some blue and white inspiration and some easy ways to bring it into your home.

Say it with Stripes

Who doesn’t love a classic stripe? Stripes are one of the most common and beloved blue and white patterns and we couldn’t agree more. Turn your home into a nautical retreat with blue and white cabana stripes, or go a little bit more traditional with pinstripes and seersucker. Either way, we’ve never met a stripe we didn’t like.

Mix and Match

Mixing and matching shades of blue is a great way to add dimension to your space. Dark hues of navy can add depth to a room, while shades of light blue add a sense of fresh air and are reminiscent of blue skies. When a deep navy blue feels a little too bold, complimenting it with light blue like Gray did in the master bedroom of his Lake Michigan home helps keep the space feeling light and airy.

Use Small Accents for Big Impact

Small accents can go a long way. We love using ginger jars and chinoiserie in different places around the house to bring unexpected pops of our favorite color combo. In the pictures above you can see how Gray used different sized ginger jars to add dimension to his kitchen island and make a statement. He complimented them perfectly with the smaller blue and white vases above the sink and on the dining table.

Be Bold

Bold patterns like blue and white wallpaper and mixing printed pillows are a great way to make a statement with your decor. Sometimes when you’re in the process of making the selections it can feel a little messy, but when done right all the patters will play off of each other nicely and compliment each other. You can even go a little bit further and mix patterns and shades of blue.

Bring the Sky Inside

One of the best ways to ground a space is to tie it to the nature right outside. This can easily be done by bringing in neutral tones and shades of green. But, one of our favorite ways to do this in an unexpected way is to paint the ceiling a pale shade of blue as a nod to the beautiful blue sky. You can see how Gray did this by painting the ceiling of his porch with Borrowed Light by Farrow & Ball. It’s one of those small details that can really make a difference.

Make a Statement

Decorating with blue and white doesn’t necessarily have to mean that the color combo is everywhere. Sometimes all it takes is having one bold pop of blue that roots the entire room. Painting your kitchen island a deep shade of navy, but leaving the rest of the room white like Gray did in the kitchen of his Lake Michigan home is a great way to achieve this look.

If you’re not sure where to begin, why not start by adding a piece of blue and white art to your home. Some of our favorite blue and white prints are The Sailboat Newport Harbor, La Fontelina Loungers, Navy Striped Umbrellas, and Blue and White Square. No matter what your overall decor style is, we’re certain you’ll love this combo as much as we do. Get started by taking advantage of our 20% off promotion by using the code HOME20.
