Sips & Snacks: 3 Cocktail Recipes Inspired by Our Favorite Pop Culture Icons

We’ve fallen head-over-heels for Gray’s newest Bon Voyage series, and the inspiration we’re getting from these prints isn’t stopping anytime soon. There’s just something so dreamy about the vision of living the high life (literally and figuratively) 30,000 feet in t h e air—cocktail in hand, of course. Much like the icons in Bon Voyage, it’s obvious that every cocktail has its own flavor and “personality,” and we couldn’t help but get inspired by a few of our favorites. So whether you’re mixing up one of these elegant rosé cocktails, a sassy martini, or a spicy bloody mary, there’s sure to be a recipe for everyone on this list and we hope one of them becomes your new favorite 5 o’clock pick-me-up (they’ve sure become ours!). But enough chat, let’s get to the cocktails…

INSPIRED BY… ‘THE BLONDE’

Gray Malin's The Blonde from Bon Voyage series

For this cocktail, we were inspired by the idea of a French 75—a classic, old-school gin cocktail. But in our variation, we decided to give it a modern twist and create a fusion between a classic French 75 and a martini, by using vodka and olives (from the martini) and bubbles and lemon (from the French 75). It’s the perfect twist on an old-school classic with flavors that complement each other oh-so-well. Keep scrolling for the details…

Ingredients:

1-2 olives

3 tbsp. vodka (instead of gin, which makes it a classic French 75)

1 ½ tbsp. fresh lemon juice (and peel for garnish)

1 cup ice cubes

¼ cup soda water

Instructions:

1. With a pairing knife, slice the peel from your lemon in a long, thin spiral. (Set aside for your garnish.)

2. Combine gin and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake vigorously for 20 seconds.

3. Strain the mixture into a chilled glass and top with soda water.

4. Twist your lemon peel tightly around your finger and hold, to give it that perfect curl.

5. Garnish drink with lemon twist and olives, and serve immediately. Enjoy!

INSPIRED BY… THE FIRST LADY’

There’s nothing more elegant for the First Lady than a sparkling pink champagne cocktail! (But Jackie O. or not, we all deserve a little rosé cocktail every once in a while.) Not only is this recipe quick and easy, it’s also pretty as can be for your next girly get-together or sophisticated soirée. Keep scrolling to see how to recreate it at home…

Instructions:

1. Combine all wet ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake for 20 seconds.

2. Pour mixture into a champagne coupe.

3. After you’ve poured your glass, spritz the surface of your mixture with rose water for added scent and color.

4. Garnish with fresh rose petals and serve! Tip: You can also sugar your rose petals for an extra pretty touch. See sugared rose petal recipe below…

For Sugared Rose Petals:

Ingredients:

1 egg white

1 tbsp. water

Fresh rose petals

1 cup granulated sugar

Instructions:

Whisk egg white and water together in a bowl. Gently pick up one rose petal at a time and brush the mixture over both sides of the petal with a soft pastry brush. Sprinkle a coating of sugar onto both sides of your rose petals, and place onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Let dry overnight and use to garnish cocktails before serving.

INSPIRED BY… ‘THE VIRGIN’

bloody mary classic cocktail recipe

The unique thing about Bloody Marys is that they are endlessly customizable, and everyone makes their preferred Bloody Mary in their own way. With that said, we love the spin we put on this recipe, but feel free to get creative with your own! We decided to give ours a fresh farmer’s market twist, and we’re really digging this veggie-heavy version of a classic Bloody Mary. With local heirloom tomato, cucumber, and celery, as well as black pepper and Tabasco sauce, this farm-to-table cocktail has just the right amount of kick. Keep scrolling for the recipe…

Ingredients:

2 oz. vodka

6 oz. tomato juice

1 tsp. lemon or lime juice (we prefer lime, but the rest of the world seems to prefer lemon–take your pick!)

1 tsp. horseradish

½ tsp. olive juice

½ tsp. Worcestershire sauce

4-6 shakes of Tabasco (or hot sauce of your choosing)

A pinch of celery salt

A pinch of black pepper

  • Olives, pickles, and other preferred toppings/garnishes
