Window treatments can be a tricky biz, especially when it comes to when and where to use what window treatment. (Say that five times fast.) Our interior design contributor Daniela Benloulou is shining some light (pun intended) on all things windows today, so stick with us as she describes the difference between roller shades, roman shades, and so much more. If you’re currently stuck in the conundrum of finding the perfect window treatments for your own space, these insider tips will be invaluable as you search for THE ones. Take it away, Daniela!
BLINDS
Generally the most affordablechoice in window treatments, blinds are made of either plastic or wood that’s been arranged into slats. There tends to not be much variation in style. Blinds can be mounted inside the window frame to create a clean look, or outside the frame to make a small window seem larger.
ROMAN SHADES
Roman shades are wonderful for small and mid-size windows. Design-wise, they provide an excellent opportunity to add a pop of color or pattern in a confined area. Romans don’t always have to be traditional fabrics. They can be woven wood, bamboo, and various other materials. There are also multiple ways to mount them. You can see the difference between an inside mount and outside mount when comparing Gray’s own dining room versus bedroom below. They both achieve a clean and stylized look, and can be customized based on your preference.

ROLLER SHADES
Roller shades are ideal for achieving a clean, modern look. They can either let sunlight in or be blackout. Here’s an example of white roller shades in my own kitchen, that still allow sunlight in. If you want something that’s barely there, yet still contemporary, then these could be perfect for your space.
DRAPES
Drapes are excellent for adding drama and romanticism to a room. When installed at the proper height (which is as close to the ceiling as possible in a normal-height room), they draw the eye up, leading the mind to feel like the room is more spacious.
If you prefer a less traditional look, the same elongating effect can be achieved by simply hanging your drapes across a simple rod or on rings. The playroom for Gray’s twins is the perfect example. Bonus Tip: Don’t be afraid and mix window treatments within a single room! The drapes and roman shades in this playroom complement each other seamlessly.
SHUTTERS
Often on the pricey side, shutters are custom made woodwork for your window. They come in various wood stains or can be painted. Generally, if shutters are the most practical choice, a designer could specify them, but in most cases, I wouldn’t call shutters trendy anymore.
