Out of Office: A Designer’s Favorite Travel Destination

We’re proud to introduce you all to our newest design contributor today, MA Allen of MA Allen Interiors! We’re kicking things off with a bit of wanderlust, as MA takes us through her favorite travel destination (which just so happens to be one of our favorites too)—the Amalfi Coast. If you’ve taken even a peek at some of Gray’s most notable work, then chances are you’ve seen a print or two from his well-loved series La Dolce Vita. Well, our love for this destination runs deep, and we might have just fallen even more in love with it after reading this post. So let’s pass the mic to MA and let her take us on a little tour through her favorite destination, AND how she would bring the feeling of the Amalfi Coast indoors as an interior designer…

One of my most memorable vacations was touring around the Amalfi Coast with my husband just nine months following the birth of our first child. It’s a fond memory as the trip itself confirmed our wanderlust was indeed still intact, and that despite our changing family unit we were still two people who love to travel and explore new places and cultures.

The Amalfi Coast is truly a photographer’s—and interior designer’s—dream. It’s all stunning vistas from crazy elevations and the buildings stack one on top of another all the way up the steep inclines. I enjoyed seeing the Amalfi Coast from the car as well as from the water. It gives you two totally different perspectives. I recommend renting a boat and captaining it yourself. It’s very easy to self navigate if you are minimally comfortable with boating because the water is not tidal and dock hands are eager to help you at each stop.

We rented a small center console boat and traveled to Capri. For me, the highlight was lazing around La Fontelina Beach Club all day enjoying the drinks, views and excellent people watching. Chairs and umbrellas are set up along the cliffside which makes for a unique beach club feel compared to what we are used to. Two Chairs, La Fontelina Capri is meant to hang on my wall as a reminder of this trip highlight with just the two of us.

Positano is also incredibly beautiful and so lively. Walking along the meandering streets is a must and make sure to take time to have custom sandals made in town. Hotel Sirenuse is a jewel, so don’t miss it. Gray Malin’s Positano Beach Vista takes me back, I can almost smell the salt water and hear the rolling waves.

Interiors Inspired by the Amalfi Coast

For me, an Amalfi inspired interior would feature patterned tile floors and whitewashed walls. The minimalist feel from white walls gives an almost gallery feel, allowing the artwork to pop, or views of the coast through windows to stand in like framed artwork. Upholstery in all white or solid colors would continue a simple, yet striking interior. Add in plants to bring natural green into focus.
