Tips & Tricks: 5 Ways to Make Your Guest Room More Welcoming

In theory, a guest room should be the easiest room of your home to decorate. You don’t use it every day, and chances are the people who do will only be staying there for a few days. But if you really want to make your guest room memorable, you’ll have to look beyond neutral sheets and generic wall art and think of it as a space that will set the tone for your guests’ visit and make them feel welcome in your home. We rounded up the five key ingredients to a standout guest room and we’re sharing them with you below, so you can turn your space into a relaxing oasis. And who knows? By the time you’re done, you may want to change your guest room into your master bedroom…

1. Cozy Throw Blankets

There’s nothing worse than being cold while saying in someone else’s home. You don’t know how to work the air-conditioning or where the extra blankets are, and the last thing you want to do is bother your hosts in the middle of the night. Make things simple by stocking your guest room with plenty of cozy throws. Store them in a woven basket to add extra texture to the space, or add them to a covered storage bench to keep things minimal (just make sure to give your guests a heads up on where to find them!).

2. Eye-catching Art

One of the easiest ways to make your guest room feel instantly more welcoming is the addition of some striking wall art. While it can be tempting to stick to neutral prints, or skip the art all together, a memorable print can make the room feel intentional, rather than a space to store an extra bed. We love soothing prints like this one for a calming atmosphere, or a bolder print like this one for a pop of color.

3. Scented Candles

We all know that one person whose house always smells amazing the moment you walk through the door… The secret? Lots and lots of scented candles. Not only will they give your guest room a warm and welcoming glow, but the little extra touch of lighting a candle will also show your guests that you care. Look for scents that are natural and blendable, rather than artificial or flowery. This will let you layer them with ease and ensure that your guests won’t be overwhelmed by the scent upon arrival. Luckily for you we recently launched brand new candles on our site that you'll love.

4. A Unique Catchall

Keep your guests (and your room) organized with a chic catchall to store their everyday essentials like spare change, watches, sunglasses, and keys. Living out of a suitcase is tricky, so make your guest room feel like their home away from home. We love these trays as a way to add a personal touch to the room, and we can guarantee it will be one of those pieces that have them asking “Where did you get that?!” by the time they leave.

5. Extra Toiletries

Cement your status as the ultimate host with a basket of all the essentials your guests may have forgotten. Round up all those mini shampoos and soaps you’ve snagged from hotel rooms (or hit the travel section at your local drugstore if you don’t have any on hand) and form a collection so that you can offer them up each time you have visitors. Be sure to include shampoo, conditioner, body wash toothpaste, and an extra toothbrush at the minimum, but if you have extras like face masks or mouthwash, feel free to add them in
