Design Direction: 5 Interior Design Trends That are Making a Comeback

byTeam GM

If there’s one thing we know to be true about trends (both in fashion AND in interiors), it’s that everything seems to make a comeback. While some trends may be better left in the past (looking at you, dad sneakers), we’re definitely on board with bringing back a few trends from yesteryear that easily feel fresh again with a little modern twist. We’re highlighting five of those trends that we have on our radar today, and we want to know what you think… Have these 2019 interior design trends rightfully earned their spot in our spaces? Or should they be left in decades past? See for yourself…

Rattan & Cane

Rattan and cane are both materials that fall under the umbrella term of “wicker.” Although this trend was introduced WAY back when, the materials were popularized in the early 1900s and again in the 60s. In today’s interiors, we see this trend popping up in all of our favorite coastal, boho, eclectic, and “California casual” spaces. These are some of the pieces we are currently eyeing, and we have to say, we’re definitely proponents of this trend making a comeback.

  1. Rattan Side Table | 2. Cane & Acrylic Tray | 3. Hanging Chair | 4. Table Lamp | 5. Cane Cesca Chair | 6. Cane Armchair | 7. Rattan Sconce | 8. Caned Sideboard| 9. Rattan Accent Chair | 10. Dome Pendant Light (As seen in Gray’s own guest bedroom!) | 11. Cane Bookshelf

Sherpa & Shearling Seating

While the thought of “furry” furniture from decades past kind of makes us cringe, we have to admit that the modern and more Scandinavian take we’ve seen on these pieces in recent years has us reconsidering. Lesson learned: not all fur has to be shaggy and over-the-top. Adding just a little pop of these materials in your home—especially when mixed with neutral hues and warm wood tones—will easily cozy up any space, all while exuding style to spare and that coveted retro-cool vibe.

  1. Shearling and Linen Armchair | 2. Faux Shearling Sofa | 3. Shearling and Acrylic Stool | 4. Office Chair | 5. Lounge Chair | 6. Ottoman Pouf | 7. Convertible Lounger | 8. Rocking Chair

80s Furniture Silhouettes

We never thought we’d say it, but the 80s are back in a big way. This decade was all about bold and wild furniture silhouettes, inspired by geometric lines. These pieces are giving us those 80s vibes but in a totally modern way…

  1. Match Striker | 2. Vase | 3. White Side Table | 4. Mirror | 5. Boucle Chair | 6. Black Side Table | 7. Wave Chest | 8. Circle Back Chair | 9. Jelly Bean Coffee Table | 10. Terrazzo Side Table

Macramé

Macramé is a boho lover’s dream inspired by the 60s and 70s, and we’re seeing this trend make a resurgence in all sorts of interiors lately. Macramé is the most accessible in décor pieces like wall hangings and planters, but some of our favorites include this retro-inspired chair and these to-die-for light fixtures below…

  1. Wall Hanging | 2. Woven Accent Chair | 3. Beaded Pendant Light | 4. Macramé Shelf | 5. Hanging Planter | 6. Throw Blanket | 7. Tasseled Pendant Light | 8. Hammock

Bold Wallpaper

If you’ve followed along with us for a while, then you know that this isn’t the first time we’ve highlighted how much we love that wallpaper is making a comeback. We’re obsessed with the revamped, modern ways to use wallpaper we are seeing today, and if we could offer just one piece of wallpaper advice it would be this—don’t be shy!

  1. The Sunbathers | 2. Orange Crush | 3. Midnight Tropic | 4. Lady Flamingo | 5. Jungle | 6. Ocean Waves

What do you think—are you welcoming these trends back with open arms or do you think they should stay in the past?

We have to be honest, we’re here for it! (At least so far.) For more design inspo, click here.
