Design Direction: 5 Décor Textures That Were Made For Fall

Remember those homemade Halloween “mystery boxes?” You’d put your hand inside the box, and suddenly peeled grapes would turn into spooky eyeballs and cold spaghetti into worms… it all came down to what you could feel. Today we’re also talking fall texture, but don’t worry, it’s the much more aesthetically pleasing, cozy kind. Think luxurious velvets, grounding woven grasses, and buttery soft leathers… AKA the essentials you need to add a little autumn warmth to your home. If you live in a warmer climate, these details can also help you get in the fall spirit… even if the temperature outside doesn’t reflect your readiness to carve pumpkins and rake up fall leaves. Keep scrolling to see how some of our favorite designers incorporated these fall-inspired textures into their homes, and for our best tips on how you can follow their lead…

1. Velvet

If you need us, we’ll be spending the rest of fall curled up in this cozy nook dreamed up by Claire Thomas, reading book after book in these plush velvet chairs. Velvet is one of the most versatile fabrics, working equally well in a darker and more serious living room as it does on these playful blush-pink chairs. When considering adding a velvet piece to your home, think realistically about the wear and tear the piece will incur. If possible, use a protectant like Scotchgard on the piece to make it last for years. After all, with a fabric as luxurious as velvet, it’ll swiftly become the most loved piece in your home.

2. Woven Grasses

Natural, woven grasses are one of the easiest ways to add a touch of visual interest to a room that feels a little bland, and they can take a number of forms. Easy and practical woven baskets like the ones Kate Lester styled here are a great way to add a neutral, yet eye-catching element to an entry way or nook in your home that could use an extra dose of texture. We also love incorporating large woven pieces like dining chairs or lighting fixtures for a room that feels rich, yet airy.

3. Wool

Nothing is cozier on a chilly fall day than wrapping up in a cozy blanket in front of a roaring fire. Bring a little bit of that warmth and softness to your home with wool accents, whether they’re in the form of textured wall hangings, throw pillows, or stacks of blankets for nights curled up on the couch. Take a tip from Courtney Bishop Designs and incorporate more than one throw blanket to your living room for a multidimensional and layered look.

4. Faux Fur

This piece from Clements Design might just be the coziest chair ever, and the plush faux fur makes it ideal both as a statement piece and for that morning cup of coffee. When looking for faux fur pieces, it’s worth it to spend a little more for a material that looks (and feels!) luxe—nothing will cheapen a room more quickly than a bedraggled, synthetic throw. Think about where the piece will be used to determine fur length, and remember to keep white fur safely out of highly trafficked places.

5. Leather

Sink into luxurious leather this season, and don’t be afraid to think outside the typical color palette while you’re at it. We love how this deep slate blue couch from Arent & Pyke Studio plays off the other rich and moody hues in the room for a fall-centric feel. Copy this look in your home by opting for leather pieces that will make a statement, whether that’s by using an unexpected color or an unconventional shape—and let your leather pieces shine as the new season starts.
